Ross Matteson

United States, born 1957
Place of BirthUnited States of America
BiographyRoss Matteson expressed an early interest in ornithology and began carving wooden birds in high school. He attended Evergreen State College in Washington and, in 1980, earned a Bachelor's of Arts degree with a concentration in mass media. Matteson claims Bill Reid and Allen Houser as sculptural influences.
Matteson is a keen falconer and sculpts from direct observation of live falcons as well as other birds of prey and wildlife. His sculptures are proportionally and anatomically accurate although they are not strictly realistic. His use of bronze and brown glass allows Matteson to create highly stylized, clean lines. The National Museum of Wildlife Art's Perfect on Petra exemplifies Matteson timeless and refined style. Matteson attempts to create an intimate connection with the viewer, touching on human emotions.
Matteson is a member of the Society of Animal Artists.
