Skip to main contentBiographyBenno Raffael Adam was born in Munich, Germany on July 15, 1812. He was a member of a famous German family of animal and sporting artists and his father, Albrecht Adam, was also a distinguished painter of military subjects, many of which were commissioned by leaders of the day. Benno Adam specialized in animal portraits and hunting scenes, working in oil and watercolors. At a very young age he began artistic education by producing lithographs and studies of animals in pen and ink and oils. He was associated with the Chiemsee artists’ colony (one of the oldest and best-known artists colonies in Europe on Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria, Germany). In addition to his paintings, he illustrated several textbooks and manuals, including ‘Guide to Beef Cattle Breeding and the Diverse Use of Horned Cattle’ from 1851. In the summer of 1834, he married Josepha Quaglio, the eldest daughter of the painter and architect Domenico Quaglio. Their son Emil Adam also became a noted painted of sporting compositions. Benno Adam’s brothers were the painters Franz and Eugen Adam. Adam is well represented in museums including ones in Basel, Hamburg, Kalliningrad and Munich. Adam died in Kelheim Germany on March 8, 1892.
